Alles in Butter (everything is fine), Butter, Plastic, Metal, Cookie, dimensions variable, 2020
work by Vivian Chan

I have lived in Germany for almost a decade and had never heard of the german phrase "Alles in Butter" before. Nor do I regularly eat butter, despite adapting to the German language, the German culture and German life. Inspired by this idiom's origin story, in which butter was used during the Medieval times to coat products for their transportation, I decided to take on the German gaze and use iconic “Asian" objects to coat in German butter. Through German eyes, I saw and read the Asian objects through my newly assumed Eurocentric (butter) filter, making Asian-ness more palatable and suitable for Western society.
